A Birth Doula is an invaluable member of your birth support team.
What is a doula?
The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves” and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth. Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.
The relationship between doula and parents is a covenant of trust and excellent communication. “The Fit” between parents and doula is as important as any other relationship you enter into. Each couple has their own needs, desire and goals for their birth experience and you want to have a doula with the best set of skills for your situation. I encourage parents to talk to a number of doulas and get a feeling for how different people conduct business so you feel assured you are getting the RIGHT person to add to your team.
